Breast reconstructive surgery aims to rebuild your breast, either wholly or partially to match the normal breast in both size and shape following mastectomy, lumpectomy or congenital deformities
It is a reconstructive surgery, performed to restore a normal form to woman who have undergone mastectomy and would feel uncomfortable with a flat chest or wearing false breast. The goal of breast reconstruction is to make women look aesthetically in their clothing so that they can wear ordinary clothes and do not need to wear an external prosthesis.
Breast reconstruction can be done unilaterally or bilaterally which matches each other
Breast reconstruction falls into two categories.
1. Implant based reconstruction relies on implants to form a new breast mound. This is a simple and most straightforward way to create new breast and can be performed right after mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date(delayed reconstruction).
2. Flap based reconstruction uses patients own tissue from another part of body usually the back or lower abdomen to form a new breast. Flaps give warm, soft and pliable reconstructed breasts that resemble natural breast tissue and they are considered gold standard for breast reconstructive procedures.
