Dental fillings are used to treat a cavity in a tooth. A dentist removes the decayed tooth tissue and then fills the space with tooth-colored (composite)fillings and silver-colored(amalgam)fillings. Dentist shape the filling so that it looks realistic as possible, and so does not interfere the way your teeth meet when you bite and chew. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse such as from nail-biting or tooth-grinding. Fillings can last up to 5-6 years, but if not taken care of, like factors includes oral hygiene, accidental breakage, frequency dental visits can alter the life span of fillings.
Root canal treatment also known as Endodontic Treatment, is needed when tooth decay reaches the pulp (innermost layer of the tooth) and nerve in the middle of the tooth is infected and causes inflammation. It is likely to spread to rest of your teeth and gums if left untreated, it can cause severe pain. The process involves removing the infected tissue or infected pulp remains from the root canals by thoroughly cleaning, disinfecting and enlarge root canals so they can be filled to prevent further bacteria. The dentist may place a crown on the tooth for protection as well as creating a natural looking tooth. A simple root canal can complete in 30 to 60 minutes and this treatment last for 8-10 years if the patient maintains good oral hygiene.
Tooth extraction may be the best option if your tooth cannot be repaired with a filling or crown. Severe tooth decay, broken tooth, crowding teeth, tooth infection, advanced gum disease, an abscess on your gums, impacted wisdom teeth can all require a tooth extraction. For simple extractions, the dentist will loosen your teeth with dental forceps under local anesthesia to remove it. Surgical extractions are needed to remove a tooth that may have broken off or partly concealed under the gum. The extraction procedure may take 30-60 minutes and the normal healing process usually takes about one to 2 weeks.
